Explore and experience
Plaza Sur is the smallest island that can be visited by tourists, but also the most colorful island in the Galápagos and with great diversity. Coming ashore you will be greeted by brightly coloured sally lightfoot crabs crawling on the blackened lava. The endemic plant “Sesuvium microphyllum” grows beautifully red on the island during the dry season. Yellow land iguanas roam through this bright red carpet, waiting for pears to fall from the green prickly cacti. All these beautiful colours contrast beautifully with the turquoise waters that surround the island.
You access the island in the quiet bay to the north. The southern part, however, consists of high cliffs where the sea waves crash violently on the island. A paradise for a wide variety of birds. You see swallow-tailed gulls nesting while Galápagos Shearwaters, red-billed tropic birds, Galápagos petrels and frigate birds dance on the wind.
