ILLA Experience
During my travels through Ecuador, I had the pleasure of staying a few times in this beautiful boutique hotel, what a gem in the city! The hospitable welcome and warm atmosphere give you the feeling of being “at home”. ILLA Experience opened the doors for its guests at the beginning of December 2017. The mansion was part of a larger colonial building around 1700 and was thoroughly modified in the years 1910-1920.
ILLA is much more than a hotel, your stay here is an experience. The townhouse is located in the historic, residential area of San Marcos, within walking distance of the old town with all its sights. For generations, this neighbourhood has been the home of artists, writers, and musicians. In the hotel you will find countless details handmade by professionals living in the neighbourhood. ILLA hotel invites you to its neighbours where you can experience their ancient crafts and customs. A great opportunity to find out more about the people of Quito and its traditions. During my stay I learned the recipe of the delicious Ecuadorian “chocolate caliente” (did you know they drink it with cheese in Ecuador? Surprisingly tasty!), I learned everything about the Panama hat (don’t be fooled by the name, this is originally from Ecuador) and I was lucky to attend a colourful local dance.
The suites are beautiful. The hotel has three floors, each with a different atmosphere, from colonial to modern. I stayed in the Panecillo Suite, among others; every morning I would stay a little longer in bed, just to enjoy the view of the iconic Panecillo hill.
The famous restaurant Nuema is located in the ILLA Experience hotel. Chef Alejandro Chamorro worked at Noma in Copenhagen and had the honour to cook alongside celebrated Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio, both listed in the top 10 of the world. His experience is reflected in the innovative dishes prepared with ingredients from the different regions of Ecuador. Imagine: a combination of cherimoya, black garlic and the exquisite Ecuadorian dark chocolate ….! The breakfast is just as creative with different spreads ranging from savoury to sweet, homemade jams and eggs perfectly cooked to your liking.
Aves Travels only offers accommodation that we love ourselves. The location, the hospitality and the intimate small scale (the hotel has only 10 suites) make this hotel one of our favourites in the historic centre of the city.
