Mashpi Lodge
Mashpi Lodge was named best spa resort in Latin America during the 2018 World Spa Awards. The lodge is part of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. Located on a small plateau at 950 meters altitude in the heart of a 1200-hectare private reserve. The lodge is surrounded by green hills of dense cloud forests and tropical forests. Mashpi Lodge is intimate and elegant and can accommodate up to 44 guests in 22 luxury rooms with private facilities and stunning views of the surrounding nature. You enjoy world-class service and excellent gastronomy.
This luxury cocoon with a modern and refined architecture is a perfect hiding place to enjoy nature. The minimalist interior design harmonises perfectly with its environment; the ideal base to explore the unique flora and fauna of the Chocó Bio region. This region is considered to be one of the ‘hotspots of biodiversity’ in the world. For those looking for pure relaxation, the Lodge with its excellent facilities and fantastic views of the densely covered mountains from the rooms and public areas is an excellent choice.
During your stay at Mashpi you will be offered an extensive selection of excursions and activities from which you can choose according to your needs, interests and capacities. Mashpi is a remarkable place for bird watching, so most expeditions have a “bird” component, while others are specifically designed for dedicated bird lovers.
All nature trips, accompanied by enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable guides, offer the opportunity to admire the spectacular flora, including orchids, various types of moss and giant ferns. You can also view numerous species of birds, reptiles and colourful insects, including beautifully coloured hummingbirds and butterflies. Some hiking trails also take you to impressive waterfalls.
In addition to hiking trails, Mashpi has some unique installations on its site to show its natural wonders from a different perspective. A 26 meter high observation tower gives you a panoramic view of the forest and with the Sky Bike you cycle in an original way along a cable over a length of 200 meters between the treetops.
The most unique is the Dragonfly. This highlight of every trip to Mashpi takes you slowly and almost silently over a cable of up to 2 kilometres in length, sometimes under the canopy, sometimes through it and also far above it, and thus mimics the birds that fly through this protected reserve. It is a special way to experience the world from a new perspective, to spot birds and animals in the trees, to float over rivers and waterfalls, to glide in and out of misty clouds, while taking in the breathtaking views.
During our stay we had fascinating conversations with Carlos Morochz, the leader of the expedition team and a passionate biologist. Mashpi supports the local community, all employees and guides are born and raised locally and food products come from the areas in vicinity of the lodge. The Sky Bike was a fantastic and somewhat sporty experience. If you want to take it easy, it is advisable to sit down at the front. Then your traveling companion can pedal the bicycle whilst siting behind you!
